Evaluation

Evaluation

A good rating, e.g. on Google, Tripadvisor, or even on the booking portals, is very important for our hotel! Unfortunately, Mannheim has recently received far too many new chain hotels. There is currently a cut-throat competition, in which the privately run hotels are severely threatened in their existence. Some have already been sold in the last few months, so there are hardly any individually run hotels left. If you liked it with us and would like to help us, a good rating is very helpful for us, because only so one becomes attentive on us. One more hint: at Booking.com an 8 would already not be a good grade anymore, although it is written like that there.

Mailbox

The nearest post box from our hotel is behind the National Theatre car park at the beginning of Berliner Strasse on the right-hand side of the road.

Discover Mannheim Squares

The university city of Mannheim is the economic and cultural centre of the European Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region. The approximately 300,000 inhabitants are known for their honest and direct nature, and their openness has a long tradition: the city has always welcomed immigrants from all religions. Today, people from different cultures live peacefully together. There is a saying among students: "In Mannheim you cry twice: once when you come, a second time when you have to leave...". This aptly expresses the fact that the charm of the former Electoral Palatinate residential city is often only revealed at second glance. But this is amply rewarded: culture, history and many surprises can be discovered here.

Resident of the Electoral Palatinate

Mannheim was once a residential city of European rank: from 1720, Elector Karl Philipp had the second-largest Baroque palace in Europe built after Versailles - with one window more than the great model. The old residence in Heidelberg had been badly damaged in 1689 and was no longer up to date, so he moved the court to Mannheim. From 1742 onwards, Elector Karl Theodor enhanced Mannheim's reputation, and the courtly life also attracted W.A. Mozart to the squares for a few months: "As I love Mannheim, so Mannheim loves me" (letter of 12.11.1778). J.W. Goethe also visited the city several times and wrote in "Hermann und Dorothea" about the friendly Mannheim, which is evenly and cheerfully built. When Karl Theodor's court moved to Munich, the city lost its status.

How it works with the squares

The rectangular street system characteristic of Mannheim was already laid out when the city was founded. Even though this is hardly geometrically correct, the resulting building areas are referred to as "squares". Destruction and reconstruction, the building of the castle and the expansion of the city centre have led to repeated changes in the layout and designations. The current system of letters and numbers instead of street names has existed since 1811 and marks the 144 squares within the horseshoe. The house numbers of a block begin at the corner facing the castle.

Culture & Leisure

The cultural tradition goes back to the courtly life of the electors. The Mannheim School as a pioneer of classical music has produced the stylistic elements Mannheim Crescendo, Mannheim Rocket and Mannheim Sigh. The National Theatre, Music Academy, Pop Academy and festivals such as Enjoy Jazz have made Mannheim the "UNESCO City of Music". Important museums are the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum, the Kunsthalle and the Technoseum. The SAP Arena is one of Germany's largest concert halls with up to 15,000 seats. It is also the home of the multiple German champions "Adler Mannheim" in ice hockey and "Rhein-Neckar-Löwen" in handball. Since the 1975 Federal Horticultural Show, the Luisenpark and the Herzogenriedpark have offered local recreation. Another BUGA is planned for 2023.

City map

City map

Mannheim is also known as the "square city". Its historic city centre is not divided into streets, but into blocks of houses - the squares! The city centre, which extends in a horseshoe shape from the castle towards the Neckar, is framed by the ring roads Kaiserring, Friedrichsring, Parkring and Luisenring.

Of course, Mannheim was not planned on the drawing board and so the squares have undergone the structural changes of the last centuries. Almost none of them is square: most are rectangular or trapezoidal to rhombic and merged "squares".

The division of the squares according to alphabet and numbers replaces the street names. Each square has its own letter and number, each house has a house number as usual.

If you don't have a city map at hand, the ABC of squares will help: seen from the castle, the squares in the western half of the city are labelled A to K, in the eastern half L to U. The squares with the number 1 - such as A 1, B 1, L 1 or M 1 - are located on the so-called Breite Straße, the visual axis from the castle towards the Neckar. This also applies to the house number 1 of each square. To the west of Breite Straße, the house numbers count anti-clockwise, to the east clockwise around the corresponding square.

Quite simple, isn't it?

Our house

Art Nouveau facade of the hotel

Our charming 3-star hotel is located in a listed Art Nouveau building in the centre of Mannheim. It was built between 1902 and 1904 and was used for the first fifty years as a residential and representative house for the Speyer brickworks. From 1953 Mrs. Mack (née Binz) began to gradually transform the house into a hotel, always ready to do everything to make her guests' stay in Mannheim a pleasant and relaxed one.

In 1976, Helmut Binz, nephew of Mrs Mack, took over the management of the hotel. He initiated an extensive renovation process that has continued to this day. Since then, a lift and air conditioning have been installed, the staircase and art nouveau façade have been restored, the roof gables have been renewed and the rooms have been renovated several times.

All this work makes our hotel shine in the best light today. With 47 comfortable rooms, mostly renovated and equipped with air conditioning, flat screen, Wi-Fi and modern bathrooms, as well as our special highlights, the "Tower Room" and the "Junior Suite", we offer you the room with the right ambience for every occasion.

At the beginning of 1996 I, Christian Binz, took over the management of the hotel from my father and since then I continue with great passion the tradition of my family to spoil our guests with the best services and make them happy!

We look forward to your visit.

Your family Binz,

Christian Binz
