Rating

Rating

A good rating, e.g. on Google, Tripadvisor or on the booking portals, is very important for our hotel! Unfortunately, Mannheim has recently seen far too many new chain hotels. There is currently a cut-throat competition in which the existence of privately run hotels is severely threatened. Some have already been sold in the last few months and so there are hardly any individually run hotels left. If you enjoyed your stay with us and would like to help us, a good rating is very helpful for us, as this is the only way we can get noticed. One more note: at Booking.com, an 8 would no longer be a good rating, even though it says so.

Mailbox

The closest mailbox to our hotel is located behind the parking lot of the National Theater at the beginning of Berliner Strasse on the right side of the street.

Discover Mannheim squares

The university city of Mannheim is the economic and cultural center of the European Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. The approximately 300,000 inhabitants are known for their honest and direct manner, and their openness has a long tradition: the city has always welcomed immigrants from all religions. Today, people from different cultures live together peacefully. The saying "In Mannheim, you cry twice: once when you come, a second time when you have to leave..." circulates among students. This aptly expresses the fact that the charm of the former Electoral Palatinate residence city is often only revealed at second glance. But this is amply rewarded: there is culture, history and many surprising things to discover here.

Resident of the Electoral Palatinate

Mannheim was once a residential city of European standing: from 1720, Elector Karl Philipp had the second largest Baroque palace in Europe after Versailles built - with one more window than its grand model. The old residence in Heidelberg had been badly damaged in 1689 and was no longer up to date, so he moved the court to Mannheim. From 1742, Elector Karl Theodor enhanced Mannheim's reputation, and court life also attracted W.A. Mozart to the squares for a few months: "As I love Mannheim, so Mannheim loves me" (letter dated November 12, 1778). J.W. Goethe also visited the city several times and writes in "Hermann and Dorothea" of the friendly Mannheim, which is built in a uniform and cheerful way. When Karl Theodor's court moved to Munich, the city lost its status.

How it works with the squares

Mannheim's characteristic rectangular street system was laid out when the city was founded. Although hardly geometrically correct, the resulting building plots are referred to as "squares". Destruction and reconstruction, palace construction and extensions to the city center resulted in repeated changes to the layout and designations. The current system with letters and numbers instead of street names has existed since 1811 and identifies the 144 squares within the horseshoe. The house numbers of a block begin at the corner facing the castle.

Culture & Leisure

The cultural tradition goes back to the courtly life of the electors. The Mannheim School, which paved the way for classical music, gave rise to the Mannheim Crescendo, Mannheim Rocket and Mannheim Sigh. The National Theatre, University of Music, Pop Academy and festivals such as Enjoy Jazz have made Mannheim a "UNESCO City of Music". Important museums include the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museum, the Kunsthalle and the Technoseum. The SAP Arena is one of Germany's largest concert halls with up to 15,000 seats. It is also home to the multiple German champions "Adler Mannheim" in ice hockey and "Rhein-Neckar-Löwen" in handball. The Luisenpark and Herzogenriedpark have offered local recreation since the Federal Garden Show in 1975. Another BUGA is planned for 2023.

City map

City map

Mannheim is also known as the "city of squares". Its historic city center is not divided into streets, but into blocks of houses - the squares! The city center, which extends in a horseshoe shape from the palace towards the Neckar, is framed by the Kaiserring, Friedrichsring, Parkring and Luisenring ring roads.

Of course, Mannheim was not planned on the drawing board and so the squares have undergone the structural changes of the last few centuries. Almost none of them are square: most are rectangular or trapezoidal through to rhombic and merged "squares".

The division of the squares according to alphabet and numbers replaces the street names. Each square has its own letter and number, each house has a house number as usual.

If you don't have a city map to hand, the ABC of squares can help: the squares are labeled A to K in the western half of the city as seen from the castle, and L to U in the eastern half. The squares with the number 1 - such as A 1, B 1, L 1 or M 1 - are located on Breite Straße, the visual axis from the castle towards the Neckar. This also applies to the house number 1 of each square. To the west of Breite Straße, the house numbers count anticlockwise, to the east clockwise around the corresponding square.

Quite simple, isn't it?

Visit the castle

Mannheim's baroque palace (now the university) is also within walking distance. With a length of almost 450 meters and an enclosed area of six hectares, the extensive complex is one of the largest palaces in Europe. Mannheim Palace is the second largest baroque palace complex in Europe after Versailles Palace - and has exactly one more window than its French counterpart ;-)

Our house

Art Nouveau façade of the hotel

Our charming 3-star hotel is located in a listed Art Nouveau building in the center of Mannheim. It was built between 1902 and 1904 and used for the first fifty years as a residence and representative house of the Speyer brickworks. From 1953, Mrs. Mack (née Binz) began to gradually transform the house into a hotel, always ready to do everything she could to ensure her guests had a pleasant and relaxing stay in Mannheim.

In 1976, Helmut Binz, Mrs. Mack's nephew, took over the management of the hotel. He initiated an extensive renovation process that continues to this day. Since then, an elevator and air conditioning system have been installed, the staircase and Art Nouveau façade restored, the roof gables renewed and the rooms renovated several times.

All this work means that today our hotel shines in the best light. With 47 comfortable rooms, mostly renovated and equipped with air conditioning, flat screen, WLAN and modern bathrooms, as well as our special highlights, the "Tower Room" and the "Junior Suite", we offer you the room with the right ambience for every occasion.

At the beginning of 1996, I, Christian Binz, took over the management of the hotel from my father and since then I have been passionately continuing my family's tradition of pampering our guests with the best services and making them happy!

We look forward to your visit.

Your Binz family,

Christian Binz
